Release: UK 2006 (Cert 15)

Director: Ken Loach

Starring: Cillian Murphy

Review: Here

In The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Ken Loach applies his political film-making to the relatively recent history of the struggle for an independent Ireland and the resultant formations of Eire and Northern Ireland.
Set in the 1920s, this powerful period drama tells of the events leading up to the withdrawal of the British and the bitter rivalries that followed. Depending on where your sympathies lie, you may see this film as pro-IRA (or at least anti-British), or you may see it as an allegory for what’s happening in Iraq at the moment. Either way, you will be left in no doubt that today’s full paid up, EU-member Ireland has an uncomfortable past.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley won a Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival. This is a carefully crafted and finely acted piece of work and the award was well-deserved.
