![]() | Monday 6th June, Reel Cinema, Andover Start time: 8:30p.m. Release: 2011 (Cert 15) Director: Nick Hamm Starring: Ben Barnes, Krysten Ritter and Robert Sheehan After concentrating on classic movies in its most recent presentations, Andover Film Club comes bang up to date at the Reel on Monday June 6th with “Killing Bono” (cert 15). Released earlier this year, this is a comedy film telling of the real-life rivalry between two 1980s teenage bands. In one, two brothers dream of becoming global rock stars but they can only look on as their rivals and old school friends become the world-famous U2! The screenplay was written by comedy icons Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, and The Guardian summed it up as “a boisterous comedy with a Likely Lads feel”. On a more serious note, it is the last film in which the late Pete Postlethwaite makes an appearance. As always the presentation is open to the public as well as club members, and the show will start at 8.00pm. Introduction Given On The Night, By Pete TorkingtonSet in the late 70's and early 80's this film is based on ture events, about two bands, formed at school. One band never really made, the other became U2. Written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, who both have a long established pedigree in writing hit comedies for film and for TV. Interestingly, they also wrote an earlier film about an Irish band, The Commitments. The film is based on a book, "Killing Bono: I was Bono's Doppelganger" by Neil McCormick. Neil, now a music journalist for The Daily Telegraph, was the founder and lead singer of the group. The film stars Ben Barnes and Robert Sheehan. It also includes the last performance of Pete Postlethwaite who sadly passed away earlier this year. |
