Director: Niels Arden Oplev Andover Film Club’s autumn season continues on Monday November 1st at the Reel with the Swedish movie “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (cert 18). This uncompromising crime thriller was released in the UK earlier this year and is based on the award-winning book by Stieg Larsson, the first in his acclaimed Millennium Trilogy. It centres on a disgraced journalist and a computer hacker with a troubled past, who unite to solve the case of a girl who went missing 40 years previously. Their investigations uncover the sinister history of a dysfunctional family, and the film graphically depicts how far this clan is prepared to go to protect itself. The dark subject matter is not always comfortable viewing, but makes for an unforgettable cinema experience. As always the presentation is open to members of the public as well as members, and the show will start at 8.00pm. Introduction Given On The Night, By Jennifer VerityThis crime thriller which is the first novel in the Stieg Larsson trilogy has been successfully brought to the screen in 2009. The author after handing in his manuscripts to the publisher died suddenly in his early 50’s .He was a journalist and a leading world expert on anti-democratic, right wing extremist and Nazi organisations. This is the first 18 category film we have shown but it is the original version leaving its quirky Scandinavian details intact. It was called The Men who hate Women in Swedish which sums up the plot. In it there are two unusual characters: The first being Mickael Blomkvist investigative journalist and editor of the left wing Stockholm based journal Millenium. The heroine is an abused working class punk Lisbeth Salander she is played by Noomie Rapace who won an award for her gripping performance in this film. She is an ace researcher and computer hacker. The two don’t meet up until an hour into the film. Their quarry involves a corrupt very rich Scandinavian Dynasty which is familiar in many Scandinavian films and Ibsen the Norwegian playwright. They follow a lot of fascinating clues into the activities of a serial killer or killers and put their lives in danger. There is plenty of wintery desolate Scandinavian scenery and violence which can be shocking but it is a very exciting film and we look forward to seeing the other two films sometime. I won’t say any more and I hope you enjoy the film.
