The film is set in early 1960s London suburbia, and author Nick Hornby based the screenplay on an essay by journalist Lynn Barber which told of her own real-life teenage romance. A gifted schoolgirl destined for Oxford University is drawn into a whirlwind love affair with a man over twice her age. The film has been praised for its uncannily accurate depiction of the period when Macmillan was PM and Britain “Never had it so good”. Leading actress Carey Mulligan, who will be familiar to fans of TV costume dramas, won a BAFTA award earlier this year for her performance. The presentation will start at 8.15pm and as always the film is open to the public as well as club members. |
