A Taste Of Honey

Monday 12th April, 20:45   Reel Cinema, Andover

Release: 1961 (Cert 15)

Directors: Tony Richardson

Review: Here

Andover Film Club’s next presentation on Monday April 12th will take the audience back to the early 1960s, with the classic comedy-drama “A Taste of Honey” (cert 15).

Set in Salford, the film is one of the ground-breaking “kitchen sink” dramas that set out to show working class life in mid-20th century Britain with a new realism. This genre grew to include TV series such as “The Wednesday Play”, and drew heavy criticism from conservative commentators such as Mary Whitehouse for its frank depiction of sexual and social issues.

The leading actresses in “A Taste of Honey”, Dora Bryan and Rita Tushingham, both won 1962 BAFTA awards for the movie, as did director Tony Richardson. From today’s perspective, all three are true icons of an era of great social change.

The presentation will start at 8.45pm and as always the film is open to the public as well as club members.
