| No Country For Old MenMonday 1st June, start time 7:45 Reel Cinema, Andover Release: 2007 (Cert 15) Directors: Coen Bros Cast: Woody Harrelson, Javier Bardem, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin Review: Here No Country for Old Men was nominated for six Oscars and won four of them, including Best Picture and Achievement In Directing. The maverick Coen brothers were back to their best. Based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy, the film tells the story of a man who happens across the deadly result of a quarrel between drug dealers. There’s a pickup truck; and there’s $2 million in cash. The cash represents a brighter future for him and his wife. But first, they have to survive the predations of a driven, psychotic hitman. It seems as if only the world-weary sheriff is on their side. Set in the badlands of 1980s Texas, No Country for Old Men is a beautifully photographed elegy to a changing America. The unhurried, almost biblical plot centres on its three focal points in turn: the mortal just trying to get along; the devil with the power of life or death; and the tired angel for whom life is occasionally incomprehensible. This is a film of violence and stillness. It’s gripping and has moments of black humour. It’s human.
